UK Shoots Down Over 10 Iranian Drones Across Middle East

(MENAFN) Britain intercepted and destroyed more than ten Iranian drones overnight, the UK Defence Ministry confirmed Wednesday, as the country maintains a force of roughly 1,000 military personnel stationed across the Middle East.

The ministry's daily operational briefing on British military engagement amid the ongoing U.S.-Iran war revealed that the unmanned aerial vehicles were eliminated by RAF Regiment gunners "operating in a high-threat area." The announcement underscored the increasingly active role London is playing in the region's volatile security landscape.

Citing remarks made by Defence Secretary John Healey the previous day, the ministry stated: "As the Defence Secretary (John Healey) confirmed yesterday, there are now approximately 1,000 British military personnel deployed across the Middle East, defending UK interests, people, and partners."

The ministry further confirmed that UK Typhoon and F-35 fighter jets, supported by Wildcat helicopters, carried out "defensive missions" through the night, ranging across Jordan, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, and the Mediterranean island of Cyprus.

Regional tensions have surged since Washington and Israel jointly launched an air offensive against Iran on February 28 — a campaign that has killed more than 1,340 people, among them then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In response, Tehran has unleashed successive waves of drone and missile strikes against Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting U.S. military forces, leaving a trail of casualties and infrastructure damage while rattling global markets and severely disrupting international aviation routes.
